Music has long been an integral part of the Maynard community. The Maynard Community Band (MCB) an all-volunteer self-sufficient group originated from three local musical organizations, the Maynard Military Brass Band, the Imatra Band and the National Band. In 1947 a true community band was born when Mr. Louis Koski, a professional conductor and composer facilitated the amalgamation of these three musical groups. He was eventually succeeded by Mr. Ilmari Junno who continued to develop the band into a fine musical organization until the mid-1950s when Mr. Alexander DeGrappo became the conductor and gradually introduced more contemporary music into the concert programs. Through the years, the band continued to grow in numbers, attracting musicians from Maynard and surrounding communities. In 2003, Mr. Michael Karpeichik was elected to take up the baton and continue the groups’ proud tradition. Over his tenure he’s been able to increase membership and has modernized the bands’ material and performing abilities. He has raised the level of awareness, enthusiasm and musicianship while increasing performance quality over recent years.
Our members come from as diverse backgrounds as students, teachers, engineers, lawyers, real estate, housewives, retiree’s and entrepreneurs just to name a few. Ages range from early-teens to mid-eighties with abilities ranging from high school to professional musicians.
The band plays a wide variety of band literature, focusing on quality concert music, standard band repertoire and modern compositions. Performances include 10-12 annual outdoor summer concerts as well as spring and fall performances ending with our Holiday Christmas concert on December 15th at the Sanctuary in downtown Maynard.
